Allowance calculator

How much allowance should a child get? There’s no official answer, but two rules of thumb are popular: 50 cents or one dollar a week for every year of age. Pick one, adjust it to your family, and see what it means per month, per year and per chore.

Your child

Starting point
Spend, save and give
Suggested allowance$4.00per week · $17.33 a month · $208.00 a year
Spend · 50%$2.00
Save · 40%$1.60
Give · 10%$0.40

If all of it comes from chores, each of the 7 chores is worth about $0.57. Many families pay for extra jobs only and keep everyday chores unpaid. Compare the approaches.

Here’s what the two rules of thumb work out to each week. Treat them as a starting point: what the money has to cover, your budget and local costs matter more than the table.

Decide what it covers

An allowance that pays for snacks, toys and gifts needs to be bigger than one that’s only for saving. Agree what it’s for before picking a number.

Pay on the same day

A regular payday teaches planning. If money arrives at random, kids can’t learn to budget it. Many families pick Saturday or Sunday.

Let them make small mistakes

Spending it all on day one and regretting it on day five is one of the most useful lessons an allowance can teach.

When should kids start getting an allowance?

Many families start once a child can count money and understands that things cost something, often around five or six. Starting small and consistent matters more than the exact age.

Is a dollar per year of age too much?

It depends on what the allowance is meant to cover. If it pays for snacks, outings or clothes, a dollar per year can be reasonable. If it is mostly for small treats and saving, half that is a common starting point.

Should allowance be tied to chores?

Some families keep them separate, some pay per chore, and many use a mix: everyday chores are unpaid and extra jobs earn money. Our guide to paying kids for chores covers each approach.
